Why WE Do This Work
We are Duncan Cryle, Karen McAllister, Michelle Heinz, and Christopher Lawley — a team of practitioners who've each spent years inside Clear Sky Retreat Center, a spiritual community and retreat centre in the Canadian Rockies, and our sister online community of Planet Dharma, both founded by head teachers Qapel and Catherine Pawasarat Sensei.
This isn't outside consulting. We’re deeply committed spiritual practitioners who've lived the exact tension you're navigating: how to run a retreat centre or spiritual organization that's financially sound and well-governed without losing the heart at its center.
Duncan has been part of Clear Sky's organizational leadership for over 20 years, serving as Board Chair, co-Executive Director, and Associate Teacher Karen McAllister has served alongside him as co-Executive Director and Associate Teacher. Michelle Heinz lived at Clear Sky for many years as Director of Operations; after some years away, she returned two years ago as Programming Manager, supporting Duncan's work today. Christopher Lawley has been part of this community since Clear Sky's early days, and today focuses on Planet Dharma, our sister virtual community.
In 2012, Clear Sky faced near-bankruptcy. Despite everyone's deep commitment and spiritual practice, we were stuck in dysfunction around money, decision-making, and organizational structure. Through hard, messy work — addressing our blocks around money and power, building new governance systems, and learning to integrate spiritual values with operational excellence — we transformed into a thriving, financially sustainable organization.
Beyond our shared history in this community, each of us brings additional depth: Duncan through Conscious Organizations, and extensive leadership experience across retreat center, nonprofit and business worlds; Karen through The Mindful Money Coach, working at the intersection of organizational and personal money dynamics; Michelle as a Certified Integral Master Coach with experience in the social venture and innovative tech world; and Chris through Impact Concierge, bringing 20+ years of facilitation and art of hosting skills. Depending on your engagement, you may work with one of us or several, in whatever combination fits what you're navigating.
